Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry
The Qatar Chamber is considered one of the oldest chambers of commerce in the countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, as it was established in 1963 under Law No. (4) of 1963 issued on 2/16/1963 AD. The Chamber continued to operate as a department within the government departments in the country, until Law No. (11) was issued. ) for the year 1990, dated 6/6/1990 AD, with the institutional reorganization of the Chamber and considering it an independent institution of public benefit that represents the commercial, industrial, and agricultural interests of its affiliates from the various private sector actors in the state. An Emiri decree forming the members of the Council provided that these members, in the first meeting of the Council after its formation, choose from among them a chairperson, a vice-chairman, and an honorary trustee of the Fund. The membership of the Council was for five years.
However, on 7/8/1996, and in the first democratic experiment in the State of Qatar, Law No. (11) of 1996 was issued amending some provisions of Law No. (11) of 1990 AD, in particular Article Thirteen thereof, that the members of the Chamber’s Board of Directors be selected through direct election by the General Assembly of the Chamber so that the members represent the various economic sectors in the country. The percentage of representation of these sectors is determined by a decision of the Minister of Finance, Economy, and Trade (currently Business and Commerce), after seeking the opinion of the concerned ministers. The term of membership of the Board of Directors shall be four years instead of five years. As it was in the past – the Chamber’s bylaw determines how to conduct elections.
